Extrano, DC’s First (Very) Queer Superhero

Extrano, DC’s First (Very) Queer Superhero

Gregorio, code named Extrano, was a flamboyant homosexual from Peru who is selected to be one of the New Guardians of the human race into the new millennium. Gregorio’s sexuality is very apparent even though it is never explicitly named. He is surprised that one so harassed and also HIV-positive would be selected. Gregorio’s story is continued in the regular series entitled The New Guardians.

Extrano’s First Macho Makeover

Extrano Macho Makeover #1When some complained about his fey manner, he got a macho makeover in issue #7. I thought the old Gregorio was more credible. Little was made of his homosexuality in the new series, although he returned to Peru in that same issue just long enough to get a hug from his old boy friend and say good-bye (duty to the cause apparently not allowing for romantic entanglements).

“Don’t Call Me Extrano”

Extrano as GregorioGregorio returns after more than a decade’s absence. He is no longer the flamboyant queen but now a rather butch looking sorcerer living in South American with former gay Justice League, Tasmanian Devil. Midnighter must seek his Gregorio’s help (he dares anyone to call him “Extrano” for fear of mortal harm). Gregorio provides Midnighter with the extremely dangerous method of rescuing his lover Apollo who is trapped in hell. After a successful rescue mission, Apollo and Midnighter enjoy a meal with Gregorio and Hugh (the Tasmanian Devil’s human name).
